Marine Innovation Center
SITE
Newport, Oregon
Winter 2022 | Instructor Stephen Duff | Marissa Perez
The Marine Innovation Center is located in Newport, Oregon. The project seeks to connect the waterfront fishing district to the oceanic research being conducted by Oregon State University. The goal of the space is to create a sense a wonderment between the public discovery center and the second floor lab spaces to increase interest in the preservation and research of our local wildlife. Above the atrium space hangs a Grey whale skeleton, to spark interest and create a beacon to tourists and locals alike. One of the major design choices I made for the project is the hanging whale skeleton with it's circulation for the staff and researchers around it. Because the site is in Newport, Oregon, the weather conditions permit for more overcast skies, so I opted for more glazing for increased daylighting opportunities and for more views to the waterfront.
